Marbella: A Cycling Paradise

There's a facet of Marbella that has been gaining momentum over the past few years – it's becoming an incredibly bike-friendly destination. In recent years, Marbella has undergone a significant transformation to accommodate cyclists better, with a focus on creating pedestrianised areas, expanding the Paseo Marítimo and developing more bike lanes, as well as committing to a more eco-friendly approach to transportation. In this blog, we'll explore the ease of getting around Marbella on a bicycle and the developments that make it a cyclist's paradise.

Pedestrianised Areas

Marbella has been taking bold steps towards creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, which naturally benefits cyclists. The charming Old Town, with its narrow streets and historic architecture, is now primarily pedestrianised, allowing cyclists to explore its enchanting beauty at a leisurely and safe pace. Marbella's bike-friendly atmosphere extends to families with children. Many areas are designed to be family-friendly, with smooth, safe paths for kids to ride.

What’s more, residential areas such as Nueva Andalucia and Sierra Blanca provide plenty of pedestrianised areas that allow cyclists to ride around securely and access a plethora of amenities, without the need of driving.

With Marbella becoming more pedestrianised as a whole, it has not only made Marbella more cyclist-friendly but also significantly promoted the idea of eco-friendly transportation. This shift in urban planning and infrastructure highlights Marbella's commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint.

The Paseo Marítimo

One of Marbella's standout features is its breathtaking coastline. The Paseo Marítimo, our beloved seafront promenade, has seen remarkable enhancements, making it an ideal route for cyclists. With its wide, well-maintained paths, you can cycle alongside the Mediterranean Sea.

The Paseo Marítimo stretches for miles, offering the opportunity for a relaxing coastal bike ride. It also provides convenient access to virtually all of Marbella's primary areas, including San Pedro de Alcántara, Puerto Banus, the Marbella Golden Mile and Marbella Centre. Given the Paseo Marítimo's extensive reach, cyclists can explore other parts of Marbella without the need to cross or cycle on the A7 road, which can pose its own challenges. This enables cyclists to plan safer and longer cycling routes, using the Paseo Marítimo as their primary access point.

Expanding Bike Lane Network

Marbella's commitment to cycling infrastructure is evident through its growing network of bike lanes. Marbella is investing in creating dedicated lanes, ensuring that cyclists can move around safely. These lanes not only provide a secure environment for riding but also offer a practical means of commuting, especially for those who prefer eco-friendly transportation.

Explore Nature

Beyond the beaches and the town centre, Marbella boasts stunning surrounding landscapes, thanks to the incredible geographical aspect of our town. With the improved cycling infrastructure, it's now easier than ever to explore these surroundings.

One can now enjoy cycling through the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, or commence their cycling journey in the picturesque villages of Ojén and Istán. For those who are more experienced, a challenging ride up and down the Ojén and Istán road, where sweeping views of La Concha and Mediterranean Sea are guaranteed. There is also the Puerta Verde de Marbella route, which allows cyclists to ride from Nueva Andalucía all the way to Ronda.

Marbella's countryside offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and cycling is the perfect way to immerse yourself in its natural beauty.

Bike-Friendly Amenities

Marbella is not just adding bike lanes; it's also incorporating essential amenities for cyclists. You'll find bike racks, repair stations and bike-renting programs throughout Marbella, making it convenient for both residents and tourists to access and maintain bicycles.
